First impressions of Pune: From the Earth.org travel guide

Russell, our Earth.org Ambassador in Pune, shares his first impressions on the Earth.org travel guide.

Pune is the second largest city in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is also referred to as Punyanagari (city of good deeds). It is called the cultural capital of Maharashtra and the Oxford of the East. It is situated at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers, close to the Western Ghats. It was the centre of Maratha power. The great Maratha, Shivaji, was brought up in Pune. This city has produced freedom fighters, educationists, social reformers, scientists and other people of eminence.

Ecology and environment of Moscow City: From the Earth.org travel guide

Earth.org’s Ambassador in Moscow, Yuliya, gives an overview of the environment in Moscow City in the Earth.org travel guide.

The environment around Moscow city has been a great issue during the last decades. Moscow, as the largest Russia’s city and the most important in terms of country economy, suffers greatly. Nowadays it becomes more and more popular destination among Russians as well as some former Soviet people.
Not only all the Ministries and Embassies are concentrated within the city. Moscow is also the most popular corporate destination.

New businesses and investments attract new people who buy apartments, new cars and thus contribute to the crowds and pollution. The car pollution is known to cause 90% of ecology problems in the city. The other 10% is coming from chemical and industrial pollution.

The overall length of auto roads in Moscow is less than 5000 km (about 3000 miles). The fast growing of estate sector leaves Moscow packed with high buildings standing close to each other. That causes a huge problem for central parts of the city because the territory is not blown through with the fresh winds and all the chemicals stay still in the air. The density of building the city is 2,5 times more than that of European capitals. At the same time the infrastructure of roads is 7-10 times smaller.

During this enormous growth Muscovites haven’t got more parks and trees (and somewhere got less) which is also a big problem now. All these factors contribute to the worsening of ecological situation nowadays. A lot of activists try to raise awareness on the issue but definitely it needs serious and collaborative work of every person in society.
