Here we come – Ambassador power on Earth.org

I’m very happy to present you the new intro’s of our Earth.org Ambassadors!

Be sure to link with each other in social networks and keep in touch! A warm welcome to all of you :)

    Matthew Kovacs

I have only scratched the surface, really, yet enough to know that travelling is not something to be taken lightly. Travelling gives us all the opportunity to find out more about ourselves while exploring the culture of others first hand. Travel has brought me to live in places like Wales, Japan, Slovakia, Taiwan, and now Luxembourg. It is not easy to sum up into words what makes one place so special or different from the next, but I think it is for this challenge that I have joined the team.

    Julia Tikunova

Hey all! I’m Julia and I’m Moscow Ambassador at Earth.org. That’s because I’m Russian and spent quite a long time in beautiful Moscow. When I moved to US, I worked for a green startup that promote recycling waste into renewable energy. And for the next 2 years my home has moved to a small French town across Versailles, where at HEC business school I study entrepreneurship. The most interesting thing in travelling for me is exploring new cultures; that’s why I welcome any opportunity not only to travel as a tourist, but also to stay in a country as a local. I joint Earth.org because it’s a great media platform to promote responsible travelling with respect to local communities and their traditions.

I am currently testing http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/faux-facebook-connect/ ( a plugin to allow people to comment via facebook login ). Is this something we would want to allow here?

@tott the new blog is fantastic, still playing around with new features!
One question: Can we change the recent activity stream back to the old appearance – right now there’s only text, before the source icons (Flickr, su.pr, Twitter, ..) were displayed as well.
And would be nice to link the logo on top to http://blog.earth.org
    Thanks! Have anice weekend…

IMPORTANT! Last Call for action – Blog Migration day is coming. So far I received 24 WordPress.com usernames as requested in http://blog.earth.org/2009/11/hi-all-i-would-like-to-migrate-over-to/
I see 62 active users in the blog (users with posts), which means that the posts of 36 people would be assigned to one dummy account and will not be assigned to their original authors anymore. Do you want this to happen?

How to tegister for the blog and add a nice picture to your profile

The Earth.org blog is so much more than a blog. It is the where we all talk to the other people in our ‘office,’ and it doesn’t need to be serious posts only. The only rule is that it needs to be POSITIVE! There is enough bad news in the world, so the blog is where we share our daily activities, offer constructive ideas and give eachother plenty of encouragement.

It is great to post every day on the blog – we all work together and it is good to know what the other teams are doing, as well as getting to know the names and faces.

Don’t be shy – all voices and faces are welcome here.

    How to start blogging?

You can sign up to the blog here: http://blog.earth.org/ and clicking on the ‘Register Here’ link on the right-hand side of the page. This will take you to a WordPress signup page.

Choose your username and enter it in the top box (try to keep it simple, like your first name, so that other EDO team members will recognise you). In the second box, enter your email address and a link will be sent to you to activate your blog account. Once you have signed up, it is time to post your first EDO blog! Go to http://blog.earth.org and click ‘Sign in’ on the right of the page. Sign in to the WordPress page and you will be taken to a dashboard that looks like this….

You can either write a post from here, or do it the easy way… Click on ‘Visit Site’ (in the top left corner of the page, next to ‘Earth.Org – meet the team’) and you will be taken to the blog, with a big friendly space for you to post a note…..

Now you are part of the blog. Tag your posts, so that others can follow up your contributions.

Adjust your blog profile and upload a nice picture of you.

For the picture create an account at Gravatar and associate image to your email. After some time it will auto pop on the blog:

GRAVATAR – your picture for the blog

What is a Gravatar? It is a profile and picture that is stored in one place. A Gravatar is associated with all WordPress sites, which means that any time you post something on a WordPress site (like the EDO blog) your picture will automatically come up. That saves you having to create a new profile every time you join a WordPress site.

To create a Gravatar, go to http://en.gravatar.com/

When you click ‘Get Your Gravatar Today’ you will be asked for an email address. Type in your email and a link will be sent to you that you need to click to register with Gravatar.

Once you have clicked this link, you can click on ‘My Account’ on the top left of the page, and add the picture that you think best represents you.

@imogen – thanks a lot for the description, you have done a great work! We are actually working on guidelines for travel guide writers and Ambassadors. But I thought this part is of general interest, now we can link to it and things should be clear. For more transparency, more visibility and better usability at Earth.org

        Hi Imogen and Rafael, thanks!
As you can see, I added 2 tags to your post! If someone considers writing a longer blog post (like this one above) – please don’t forget to tag it with..
        1. “blog post” – so that it appears on the right side bar in “Full length blog posts”
        2. any other tag related to your topic (PR, Earth.org Ambassadors, Earth.org volunteers, tech, usability, …)
        THANKS!!

        • Rafael 2:36 pm on November 11, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Hi Teresa, of course – I had edited the post so fast that I have forgotten about the tags. Going to add them…

      This is really good.
      Thanks Rafael and Imogen.

If you have time I would ask you a second episode on the use of the side bar, the dashboard and plugins.

      THANKS!

@valentin @teresa Thinking about link building for the Blog. Is a blogging carnival something we could do something with? Anyway we write about remote work quite often here :) http://blogcarnival.com/bc/cprof_7334.html

    • valentin 2:30 pm on November 2, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

should we be spending time on linkbuilding for the blog though?

      • Rob 5:58 pm on November 2, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Well, we’re pushing the remote work topic in PR – this would kill two birds with one stone. (but then obviously no real birds would die;)

        • valentin 5:49 pm on November 2, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

lol well i don’t know about blog carinvals as we are not a typical blog. if people want to feature us and you want to spend time on it. sure go ahead. i don’t really know about featuring other blogs on here. not sure if that is our purpose you know? you decide ;) also if its only reciprocal links then… well you know.

          • Rob 10:27 pm on November 2, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Thanks V. For the ever enlightening words ;) I guess you’re right it might be more trouble than it is worth. Let’s just contact such remote working blogs to feature us instead of going into a carnival diddly doo doo.

            • Rob 10:28 pm on November 2, 2009 Permalink

Did I just say “Diddly doo doo”? I must be getting tired…

imho we should move the blog to wp.com … it does not make much sense to put this extra load on the server. also communication will come to a hold when we most need it ( when the server is down ). we will lack some flexibility but in general there is not much we cannot do on wp.com. we would lack the replies feature but gain IM notifications via jabber and have the blog fully managed and remove some load from the server while keeping the communication active in case of updates/trouble with the live server. i could create a copy of the blog on wordpress.com and we give it a test for some days. if no one likes it we just migrate it back here. thoughts?

    • emran 12:25 pm on October 30, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

hi tott. i think if we move to wp.com, we will loose control over theme/plugins/hacks. I would suggest separating it in a different server and using a cname record to point to that server. what do you say?

      • tott 2:34 pm on October 30, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

what plugins hacks are needed? for a regular blog i’d agree, but this is mainly a communication platform.

    • David 2:38 pm on October 30, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I think its actually a good idea … we could at least give it a go. This leaves the main server with just the main site, which is good.

    • valentin 3:19 pm on October 30, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

@tott i am with you on this one actually. @emran we don’t loose too much flexibility i roughly know wp.com also its probably a good thing because otherwise we end up spending too much time on the blog. time that should be invested in our product. @tott how much will it cost us?

      • valentin 3:33 pm on October 30, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

@tott we were planning on putting on more ci though on this blog? changing colors and logo etc. but i guess that can be done with custom css option no?

      • tott 4:07 pm on October 30, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

if we can handle with the regular setup it’s for free. i’ll set it up at the weekend so you can take a peek. colors and all can be adjusted with the css option.

      • tott 7:23 pm on October 30, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I will play a little bit, but we should not lose to much and might be able to bring us on VIP hosting, so I can still have access to the theme files and bring in the one or the other customization. What I would like to skip for now plugin wise is sort-by-comments, jabber-feed (obsolete), friend-feed. So the only thing we need an alternative imho is friend-feed. I will see if I find sth similar. I guess a tuned up rss feed reader will do and should be minor problem to code.

    Tags: blog

@Valentin, nice to see the video here. still I think there are too many friend feeds listed, and the authors are not so nicely displayed.
What happened to the tag cloud? For me it’s quite important to have it somewhere on the blog… cause we said not to go for categories but tags instead. now you can’t get the HOT edo topics anymore, like remote work, ambassadors, volunteers, tech, …
*yaaawn*….just some early morning thoughts, haha I am reading the blog already like a daily e-newspaper.

    • valentin yeo 5:32 pm on October 21, 2009 Permalink | Log in to Reply

@teresa: just wanted to bring the friend feed widget online again. you should take owndership of the widget stuff again. add eveyrthing you want. david can modify the author list if you want. i wanted to further develop the author list though. i want someting where i can see who is working with us. its getting hard to remember everybody. so basically what i wanted to do is clean it up and make the links go to a profile page or something. what do you say?

    Hi team!
Can Ambassadors (without earth.org email) add profile pictures for the blog? Will this work?

Create account here http://en.gravatar.com/ and associate image to your email. After some time it will auto pop on the blog.
